Design Brief:
Ardill House, built 1861 for Henry Bray, 3rd Mayor of Concord, was donated in 1918 to the SPSNNC as a refuge for neglected, homeless and needy children. In 1983 it reopened for day child care in various forms (SPSNNC mission states that use of the house needs to be related to the care of children).
The brief was
• Replace existing garden structures that were old and dilapidated.
• Create a new, grander, level path
• Create disabled access
• Improve the streetscape and entry to support its historical and architectural value
• Use quality, long lasting, low maintenance materials
• Provide for parking space and a driveway for occasional deliveries.
• Address drainage concerns
• Have no fixed climbing equipment as all climbing equipment comes in and out of the shed each day
• Include a new toy/equipment shed
• Create a multifunctional space for kids general use but also a level area to set up gazebos/ tents for fetes, fundraising.
• Create a low maintenance garden
• Include a safe verandah for children, isolated from the fire exit.
