Commercial - Educational/Institutional/Play Space Design

Design Brief:

The brief was to design a natural play space for a new 75 place early childhood education facility at Harbord Diggers, on the Northern Beaches of
Sydney.

The service spans two stories of a building on a corner of the Precinct, with the younger age
group (0-2) upstairs and the older children (3-6) downstairs. Both play spaces are located on
a suspended concrete slab. The site had significant overshadowing from a building and large boundary wall. The site also bore the brunt of some strong coastal winds. 

The brief was to create a play space that provides a safe, fun and educational experience for children. The space also had to be a tranquil and aesthetically pleasing environment in order to create a pleasant
space in which to work and play.

The grey tones of weathered hardwood timbers create a laid back coastal look and sandy
hues of the beach were introduced throughout the site in elements such as the sandstone
flagging and walls, concrete colours and gold decomposed granite.
