Landscape Design for Diverse Needs

Design Brief:

Nelson Park School is a special needs facility with a range of personalities including Autism, Down Syndrome, Global Developmental Delay, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD & Others The school approached BLUE Landscape Architects to design a sensorial garden for their outdoor space, which at the time was dated, worn out, uninviting, unchallenging and unsafe in some parts.

The garden for 6-7 y/o was to facilitate cardio and physical based activities to reduce hyperactivity, sensorial stimulation, internally motivated activities, robust elements with limited detachable equipment, wooden balance beams/logs, develop and challenge limited gross and fine motor skills, include a path for scooters, art work walls, spinning elements, space for group work and a melt-down corner.

Judges’ Comments:

A clever design for play space with diverse multi-use areas. It was a good idea to have the serpentine wall as a common binding element running through the project. The project includes a range of creative passive, social and active zones. The many changes in surfaces will provide stimulation for young minds. Once the trees grow it will have a nice sense of enclosure.
