Design Brief:
The school's brief was to create a “Harmony Garden'', a space for reflection, conversation and prayer. The space was to reflect their Christian values, while remembering the long native history of the land. The School’s vision and functional requirements had to fit into a tight, undulating parcel of land. The idea of connection, conversation, mindfulness and flow led to the use of non-linear circular forms - shapes with important symbolism and spiritual meaning to many cultures, including Aboriginal Cultures.
Circular ‘meeting places’ using hard wearing surfaces in earthy, muted tones reminiscent of the Australian bush and shapes that vaguely echo the forms seen in Aboriginal art were incorporated into the design. Spaces were interconnected in a random pattern of paths that provided accessible gradients and semi direct lines of travel when required. Plants provide screening or combine with the trellis structures to compress and expand the surrounding space as students move throughout the landscape.
Judges’ Comments:
As this garden was completed in July this year, the finished landscape will look even better when the plants have had a chance to develop and grow. The structure of the project is very clear with wide green lawn areas that are very inviting.
