Landscape Design - Large Size Design
Design Brief:
The property is 2,470 sq metres with a 180-degree view. The client requested a low maintenance, arid garden with no turf. A garden to walk through and appreciate the view from all angles. The architecture has a central courtyard & two reflection ponds. A ‘Zen like’ approach was taken with the positioning of a specimen Dracaena Draco tree, 3 sculptural rocks, organic steppers and a blanket of pebble. The natural architectural shape of the Draco reflected in the water was all that was needed to create a serene, yet striking, entry.
The selection & positioning of the oversized rocks was paramount to setting up the natural backbone of the entry garden. Basalt organic steppers set in paths of decomposed granite interchange with solid pebble paths edged with Corten metal. Low basalt block walls both retain and provide relaxed seating. Stairs of basalt blocks and deco blend with concrete squares and rectangular steppers. The purpose of the interchange to ‘slow the journey’ and experience each section of the garden and its surrounding views. Stands of Magnolias, groves of Olives nestled in a sea of ground covers replace fences and turf. A lighting plan was designed to ensure walking through the garden at night becomes a different visual experience.
Judges’ Comments:
The house and garden now complement each other with the strong architecture of the house enhanced by the landscape design including the colour and structure of the plants, soil, rocks, and stone. Balance and contrast were captured even down to the basalt stones strategically set in decomposed granite. The whole design has been carefully thought out down to placement of stone, feature trees, reflection and more. This arid garden has a peacefulness about it.
