Landscape Design - Small Scale Design
Design Brief:
The clients design brief was for an uncluttered backyard with a sense of space that flowed, a self-sufficient and easy to care for space. Materials and plantings were to be both durable and low maintenance. The design explored elements such as level changes, seating, an outdoor kitchen, lighting, shade structures, furniture, pots, and plantings.
Keeping the space open and flowing was essential. Existing site levels were exploited and slightly modified to create the split-level landscape. Classic construction materials were the hero of the project - brick, concrete and timber but detailed and finished to a high standard.
Judges’ Comments:
This is a deceptively simple and seemingly effortless but carefully and beautifully curated courtyard garden. The use of subtle silvers, greys and creams in the hardscape finishes bring in borrowed landscape elements such as the greying timber of a neighbouring home, making the courtyard feel larger and more expansive. Beautiful construction details, such as the insitu concrete bench seamlessly curving around to become a perpendicular landing step make this a high-end project befitting its location.
