"I met Dari at the LDI awards ceremony, I was keen to have a conversation after her address to the members, as what she said really resonated with me.

It was refreshing to speak to a legal person who was happy to listen to what I needed and not try to sign me up on the spot for costly legal expenses. Rather we discussed the needs of my business and why I hadn’t engaged someone sooner. Dari was very approachable, and genuinely cared about protecting small business people like myself, and giving us sophisticated tools to conduct our business in a professional, seamless way with a focus on minimising risk and maximising return.

I could tell her passion for the law was equal to my passion for landscape design and horticulture.

I have been keen for a long time to engage a solicitor to acquire professional documents for my business for peace of mind and because I know what I put together myself, was far from sufficient. As most small business owners, I was always intimidated by lawyers (and their costs), and unsure of whether it was really necessary to make that kind of investment when I could just make something myself? However, it is really a case of "what you don’t know what you don’t know".

I had no actual concept of what a proper professional contract encompassed, or what sophisticated, strategic, legal drafting looked like, nor how it could articulate and outline my processes and procedures, protect me, and cover things I had never contemplated or even realised were important. Dari was able to provide me with addition documentation that covered; intellectual property, lability, online data, communications, documentation, and general legal knowledge of my rights and responsibilities, best practice solutions, and how to avoid being liable for additional costs or wasting time on issues which can be resolved simply by having these professional tools and advice. 

Another aspect to Dari’s work that I was grateful for is her wanting to understand me and my business. I wanted proper legal documents that reflect NIWA Designs, our language, ethics, and protection for our clients and NIWA Designs. 

Many in the industry may have been where I was, using basic and generic documents. Dari’s work has made me more confident in what I do and I believe added to the professionalism of NIWA Designs. I have appreciated the continual support and advice from Dari and her team. 

We take pride in being experts in our field and should understand the expertise and professionalism of others in their industry. Designing for client is being proactive and adding value to their investment. The same should be done for our businesses. 

Simply, there is no substitute for knowledge, qualification, skill and expertise, or the benefit of the beneficiary. There is also no substitute for peace of mind, knowing your business is protected and feeling empowered rather than trepidatious about your projects.
