Design Brief:
The indigenous pavilion was designed for Walanga Muru, Macquarie University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Engagement and Strategy Office.
Walanga Muru empowers the advancement of Aboriginal knowledge, and fosters success for future generations of Aboriginal peoples.
The space was designed and created using an Aboriginal engagement approach of respect, reciprocity and relationships. These elements were used throughout the design, concept and planning stage to ensure the space was culturally affirming and respectful defining the strong and proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of Walanga Muru.
The artwork for the ground of the pavilion was created by Dharug woman and Macquarie University alumni, Professor Liz Cameron. The artwork, Circles of the Earth is a representation of Dharug lands surrounding the Hawkesbury River area.
The artwork within the steel walls was designed by PVC Indigenous Strategy, Dr Leanne Holt. The artwork represents aboriginal cultural significance in particular for the Wattamattagal clan of the Darug nation.
The Indigenous Pavilion consists of the internal gathering space, the surrounding endemic and bush tucker gardens and the informal gathering spaces below.
