Quercus Gardens - Gold Award
Landscape Design - Rooftop
Design Brief:
The brief for the roof top was to create a modern garden to complement the home's new interiors, imbuing the space with a stylish planted enclosure.
The client requested an area to cook, a place to sit and relax, with room to entertain enjoying the sunny aspect. Easy maintenance was also requested.
This garden picks up on the stylish notes of the interiors and brings a strong touch to this rooftop garden by working with the angles and shapes of the rooftop as well as introducing strong colours.
The colour palette of blacks, neutrals and oranges were selected as strong colours which would work well with the interiors and the existing flooring. The bright orange hexagonal planters are a strong accent to the space, housing lovely succulents.
This rooftop garden is for moments of relaxation and entertaining. Well placed furniture and a long floating seat provides a place to relax and stretch out, as well as larger groups of people for socialising.
To maximise the area for gatherings and entertaining, a layout of planting hugging the outer perimeter was most functional, leaving space to gather outside.
The planting needed to tolerate the rooftop conditions of heat and wind exposure. The planting sees a mix of strong succulent forms, colours and textures. Architectural plants such as Tree Aloe (Aloe Barberae) and other exotics and natives bring a range of softness and structure to the space.
The indoor kitchen is very close to the garden with large expansive doors opening to the outdoor area. A full outdoor kitchen was not needed in this instance. An innovative folding outdoor BBQ was installed. Not only is the BBQ functional, it is visually simple working with the angular elements of the garden.
