Design Brief:
A recent health scare demonstrated to the client that it was imperative to slow down and take time out. His inner west courtyard needed to be transformed into a powerful green medicinal getaway.
The existing garden layout was an awkward narrow L Shape. By installing an organic lawn shape and pathway on an angle it was visually stretched to make it feel wider. Creating layers with raised garden beds and feature tree broke up the garden and prevented a view straight to the rear garden wall.
Another key consideration was locating the garden beds in the best aspect. Unfortunately, this space was covered with an extensive concrete slab. The solution was a bespoke, raised corten planter.
The inclusion of a low timber deck created a seamless connection from the lounge to the garden. Lightweight formed concrete made a year-round hardy prep bench top area.
All the planting was selected with low maintenance in mind, ground covers and lawn cool the space with deciduous tree planting allowing the right balance of natural light in winter and shade in summer and year-round interest from scent, foliage and texture.
