sticks & stones landscape design - silver Award
Plantscape Design
Design Brief:
The brief on this project was to create a private oasis that the whole family could enjoy. Entertaining areas to accommodate large gatherings and open space for the kids to play were a top priority while the placement of particular trees and plants to create privacy was also very important to the clients. The use of organic stone and hardwood as well as soft planting compliments the colours and materials of the new house. The challenge was the significant level changes in the front due to excavation for the garage.
With this in mind a large retaining wall around the driveway was designed and spilling plants used to softened the built form. Screening plants and trees were used along the boundaries to provide ultimate privacy with little maintenance and the borrowed landscape of the neighbouring mature trees added to this secluded feeling. The battle-axe driveway allowed us to create a real sense of arrival and its shaded microclimate called for the use of lush shade loving plants.
Judges’ Comments:
Some beautiful explorations of textural contrasts with silver highlights. Careful positioning of planting for maximum privacy using just the right size plants, meeting the client’s brief. A lush, generously proportioned entertainer’s oasis. Well balanced between the various requirements of the brief.
