Design Brief:
The design for the school in the inner city of Sydney was to maximise the usable outdoor play area to create diverse, engaging areas for learning and play. It was to be mindful of the site's heritage while responding to a large, newly constructed modern building, use reclaimed site materials, provide habitat, contain food producing gardens and create a rustic, natural feel to counterbalance the surrounding high density city scape. Risky play elements for the older children and gross motor and imaginative play elements for the younger children were to be included. Their location was to be carefully considered to create a harmonious play space that avoided conflict between active and passive play types.
Off-form concrete walls delineate the sports court and play areas. Undulating concrete walls double as a seating edge and create a sweeping, organic curve to break up the geometry of the surrounding structures. A large vibrant mural on the fence line, has colours that are picked up in the play space elements. The natural play space was designed to carefully weave its way through the existing trees. A rooftop garden includes productive gardens, storage for gardening equipment and elements that help teach about sustainability.
