Design Brief:
This site is situated in a re-purposed heritage warehouse in Victoria. The brief was to create an outdoor play space for the children to enjoy. The existing built structures within the development have dominant mid-century architectural heritage components along with an industrial history throughout the community, it was important to reflect these heritage elements within the play space design.
Bricks from the site were recycled throughout the play space in the way of planter beds with hardy vegetation, retaining walls and sensory paths. The double storey container fort pays tribute to the strong exposed industrial steel trusses & Columns that became visible when the roof was removed. The re-purposed vintage red ford fire truck was positioned to protrude out of the façade as a nod to the unique history of this site while providing a distinctive imaginative play experience to the children. Three unique play areas were designed for different stages of a child’s development.
Judges’ Comments:
The result is a well-designed, complex and innovative play space for children that clearly reflects and considers the heritage elements of the site. The use of recycled materials and the inclusion of the vintage red Ford Fire Truck has created a great imaginative play experience for children. Dividing the space into 3 different play areas to cater for the different age groups at the centre was a good design solution for this space.
