outhouse design -gold Award & Commercial Landscape Design of the year
Commercial Design - Institutional/Health
Design Brief:
The client had a clear view that accommodation and associated healthcare services should enrich our sense of living and the landscape plays a key role in this. The design requirements included the key arrival landscape with formal entrance planting, as well as extensive mass native planting schemes across the overall site. A number of unique gardens are intertwined within the building, comprising larger communal spaces and smaller bespoke getaways.
Graded pathways act as a walking loop for all to enjoy, with rest spots positioned within scented garden beds, supported by seasonal trees for shade. Key garden areas such as the elevated inner courtyard provide larger spaces for communal engagement with bespoke overhead shade structures, private seating zones and scented nooks for afternoon coffee catch ups. The extensive roof garden space incorporates unique garden sculptures and sensory planting to draw in younger visitors and residents alike. Smaller courtyards provide different microclimates and planting combinations, ensuring residents are provided with a variety of experiences throughout the seasons.
Judges’ Comments:
The design delivers a high degree of utility with an extensive circulation pattern containing discrete sitting nodes within a relatively small area. There are many standout features of this design but the arbour with the laser cut leaf panels is the highlight of the project. The finished garden is imaginative and sensually appealing. It demonstrates a deep sensitivity to the requirements of aged care residents, their carers, and visitors.
