Design Brief:
The rear courtyard of this 1880’s terrace house was neglected and offered the clients no amenity. The family wanted to be able to entertain and use their outdoor area more effectively. The parents worked from home and needed to go into the courtyard to make phone calls. Spending at least 4-6 weeks a year overseas They needed a ‘lock and leave’ garden.
They had a big wish list for this small 27sqm space. An Outdoor BBQ and second fridge, seating for 8. A clear area - not too full of plants and furniture so that the children could play and a washing line. They liked the old terracotta wall that was in the rear garden and hoped to retain it.
Judges’ Comments:
This is a small courtyard area with limited opportunities but the design confidently answered the brief and delivered a usable and attractive outdoor area. The new landscape is functional and appealing.
