Emerging Designer

Design Brief:

The client’s brief was to create a ‘tropical resort style oasis’ by reworking their back-yard area with an inground pool and spa, new gardens and a levelled lawn. This was to link to an undercover patio area, located off the back of the house. They required low maintenance gardens with irrigation, and a hardy lawn species for heavy use by dogs and children.

The design reflects the varying tastes of family members. Adult 1 preferred straight lines, liked formal gardens with hedging and not too many flowers. Adult 2 preferred cottage, blended gardens with foliage to use in cut flower arranging, liked repeat plantings with a lot of texture in shades of green, grey and white. The children wanted to incorporate the existing frangipani trees.

Judges’ Comments:

The design created a functional and aesthetically pleasing resort style open space, with a well-designed pool and spa. In time, the plants will grow and add extra vertical height which will improve their impact in this backyard landscape. Clean, modern lines with a practical level lawn area have transformed this large space.
