Acre - gold Award
Landscape Design - Large Size Design
Design Brief:
This project was about connecting the architecture to the coastal conditions. Being coastal, the site was exposed and received brutal winds that whip off the ocean so a landscape that was sympathetic to the site context was important. The pool is multipurpose acting as a beautiful water feature to look on to from the house above and helping to terrace the site, activating the backyard by creating levels that can be used by the family.
Large monolithic concrete planters were used as sculptural elements within a soft plant palette but these were also designed to act as retaining and help with the sandy dune conditions.
Judges’ Comments:
The bold, simple staircase mediating the transition from the house at the top of the site down to the bottom of the landscape is a stand-out feature. Elegant in its simplicity, reflecting the character of the concrete house into the landscape with large swathes of simple planting which evoke the coastal character of the site. The design sits beautifully in its seaside environment. The colours of the house blend into the environment and the outdoor areas are functional and visually appealing.
