Plantscape
Design Brief:
This site had been stripped of trees and topsoils, was full of construction waste and heavily compacted. With heavy clays and broad climatic conditions ranging from frosts in the winter to 40+ degrees in the summer, meeting the client’s brief – a garden that was ready to enjoy straight away was a challenge.
The client requested a garden that was an amalgamation of styles - Australian, Italian, and Mediterranean, to reflect their mother’s heritage with no clear label to define it. The garden was to screen the home and provide views from inside the house. Classic topiary elements were mixed with flowering natives, deciduous weeping trees were paired with sculptural succulents and Australian sandstone paired with Italian travertine.
Judges’ Comments:
The planting design has clearly responded to what was an interesting brief. The plants provide excellent screening, softening of hard structures and a seasonal garden with cut flowers, established deciduous trees, textural evergreens and an interesting range of succulents. A seriously compromised site has been rescued and the resident’s aspirations met.
