Plantscape
Design Brief:
The landscape brief for this apartment was to design a low-lying garden to soften the balconies without obstructing the views to Sydney Harbour. The gardens were to be layered with a diverse mix of hardy species suited to the exposed coastal setting. The planting approach was to include flowering species to attract insects and birds, as well as water-wise succulent exotics to assist in future-proofing the landscape.
The obvious challenges of a rooftop project were applicable, with access limited via stairs only, exposed climatic conditions that greatly impacted planting selections, shallow and constructed soil profiles, as well as working in a building with strata. The complexity of the horticultural design lay in the planting selections. The garden receives all the weather extremes - strong winds, salt spray, driving rain, full sun and is planted in a shallow, engineered soil profile. The result, a soft and vibrant perimeter garden as the finishing touch to an exceptional apartment renovation.
Judges’ Comments:
Giving free reign to the designer was a clever ploy by the client as the textures, tones, shapes and varying sizes of the plants selected create a very pleasing kaleidoscope with rhythm in what is a superb plantscape. The layered planting design had to be carefully considered to not block out any views. All plants are thriving in this environment and the design has created a stunning space to sit in and enjoy the vibrant garden.
