Plantscape
Design Brief:
The client required a design for two separate green walls to complete the building on the northern and eastern walls. The site sits slightly elevated above a new development in a parcel of land previously used for farming. It is windy, dusty, exposed to extreme temperatures over forty degrees and northerly winds during summer while in winter the night-time minimum temperature can fall below zero and frosts are common.
The biggest challenge was to select the right plants for each of the two walls. The main wall garden faces north. Without any shelter it will receive full sun all year round. During summer the plants need to be able to withstand the late afternoon western sun. The smaller of the two walls faces east and will receive morning sun all year round, with protection from the sun after midday due to its aspect. With its semi-rural location this building has been designed to sit harmoniously within its neighbouring bushland environment. It was important that the plant selections for this design also fit in with that environment.
Judges’ Comments:
This was a challenging project due to the variable climatic conditions. Clever resolutions were found using site appropriate plants which are performing well. The green walls have flourished since being planted in 2019. The Pig Face in flower is a real highlight. The finished project is eye catching.
